Beijing’s Palace Museum to open Hong Kong branch

The West Kowloon Cultural District, seen here on March 5, 2011, will be home to the Hong Kong Palace Museum.A new Hong Kong outpost of the Palace Museum, a vast institution in Beijing that holds 1.8 million cultural artefacts, is expected to open in the West Kowloon Cultural District in 2022. Beijing's Palace Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has vast holdings of paintings, ceramics, calligraphy and antiquities from the Chinese imperial collections, and displays just a small fraction of them at any given time. The Hong Kong branch will rely on long-term loans from the original Palace Museum to display art covering 5,000 years of Chinese history.
