Which camera should i get for this photography class?

I need to get a 35-mm camera for my photography class. It has to have f-stop and shutter controls. What is the cheapest camera I could get?

A few venerable old choices are the Pentax K-1000 and the Canon AE-1. I have both of them, and the K-1000 may be have the shallowest learning curve, as you just need to make sure the needle is right in the middle of the light meter. While I do like the focusing aid in the AE-1 using a split prism instead of the normal ground glass. Both of those cameras are tanks, and will likely do you well.

Both of those are good cameras, but bear in mind, they are mostly bare bones – manual focus and the sort. The AE-1 has some Shutter Speed Priority features, but aside from that, it’s manual everything. Manual wind, manual rewind, manual focus. I think you’ll be happy with either of them.

I would recommend any SLR camera. or if you want it digital a D-SLR. I would recommend buying a used SLR and if you can Nikon brand. It would be under $20 for sure

I accidentally rated steven’s reply low…intended to rate the other one low as that person didn’t read your question. You need a 35mm camera.

AE1 and K1000 are both great cameras. I just wanted to add that the Minolta SRT series is good, too.

All of these cameras are getting really old. Good things about the K1000 and SRTs as that they’re fully manual. You won’t have a shutter release capacitor go out and turn the camera into a brick.

I’m not perfectly clear on your course requirements though. If it needs to have those controls and there are no restrictions on it having automatic features, then your choices are really wide open. Almost any 35mm SLR will let you control aperture and shutter speed. There are one or two that wouldn’t allow you to control shutter speed, which is really weird. My cousin has one…it’s a Canon but I don’t remember the model number. Anyway, since most major manufactures have made 35mm bodies during the last five years but most photographers have abandoned film for digital, you can get a really good camera for really cheap. I love the old fully manual cameras but they’re getting so old now that if it were me, I’d go for the latest model I could get a good deal on.
